In Year 1 we are taught by Mrs. Clay and are supported by Miss Simpson. Mr. Ashworth and Mrs Allen also teach us when Mrs. Clay is completing her planning and preparation.  

We follow the the school ethos 'Christ at the Heart of All We Do'  to ensure that we can complete our learning to the best of our ability.

KIRF's (Key Instant Recall Facts)

KIRF’s are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin much of the maths work we complete in school. They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.

Things to remember..

Reading Books

Reading books can be changed daily, but only if an adult has signed to say that their child has read and has finished their reading book. A house point will be reward when a book has been completed.

Mrs Clay recommends the following books this half term 


Children are to remember to put any books that need changing into the 'reading book changing box'.

If they are not put into the box in the morning they will  be changed on the following day.

Spelling Folders

Spelling folders will be sent home every Thursday. The spellings should be learnt at home throughout the week for the test on the following Thursday. Ideas for how to help learn spellings have been sent home and can be found below on this page.

Spelling folders will need to be handed back in every Thursday, so new words can be added for the following week. (Hand in Thursday – back out the same Thursday)

Snack time

Snack time takes place at morning playtime. The snack consists of a vegetable or a piece of fruit. If your child does no like the snack provided by school, a piece of fruit or vegetable snack can be sent in from home. If your child receives school milk, this will also be consumed at snack time. If your child does not receive school milk, they can have a drink from the water bottle they have brought from home.

Water bottles

Children are allowed to bring water bottles into school. They will be kept in a box by the sink and the children will have access to them throughout the day.


In Year 1 we are improving our presentation by learning to use cursive handwriting. An alphabet strip can be accessed below,  showing you how we form the letters when writing.


P.E. days are Tuesday & Thursday and children should attend school dressed in their PE kit on these days.

Religious Education

This term we will be studying the three themes of Domestic Church (Family), Baptism and Confirmation (Belonging) and Advent and Christmas (Loving). Each class will approach the themes through different topics. The children will also spend a week studying Judaism.

The first theme that we studied was 'Domestic Church'. In Year 1 we looked at families, including God's love and care for every family. The following photograph slideshow shows the sequence of our learning.

The second theme that we studied was 'Baptism/Belonging'. The Year 1 learning outcomes for this unit were to know and understand:

• About belonging to different groups.

• That Baptism is an invitation to belong to God’s family.

The third theme that we studied in Autumn was Advent/Christmas - loving. The Year 1 learning outcomes were to know and understand:

•  About the times that it is necessary to wait and the use of that time.

•  That Advent is a time of waiting to celebrate Jesus’ coming at Christmas.

We started by making a class advent calendar that contained 2 acts of kindness for each day of Advent. Then we made our own Advent wreaths.


Autumn 1 English

During this half term we have looked at the book 'Harry the Happy Mouse'. We read, analysed and responded to the text. Next we gathered content and planned an extra part of the story. Then we wrote our stories. Finally we carried out a non-fiction unit about mice,learning and writing facts about mice.

Autumn 2 English in Year 1

 During the Autumn 2 half term Year 1 have carried out an integrated English unit based on the book 'Supertato' by Sue Hendra.


Creating an interest - first we used our senses to explore fruits and then used this knowledge to write a poem about fruits.

Reading response and reading analysis - we immersed ourselves into the text by looking at new vocabulary, making predictions, retrieving information and inferring how characters felt.

Instructions - next we carried out a mini non-fiction unit on instructions. We made and wrote instructions for making a jelly and for making a jam sandwich. This was also used as gathering content for our innovated story.

Gathering content and planning - from a visual story map we learnt the text off by heart. Then we gathered ideas and planned our innovated stories.

Writing phase - finally we used our ideas and planning to write an innovated story based on Supertato.


Autumn 1 Science Everyday Materials

During the Autumn 1 half term the pupils have been taught to:

  • Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made.
  • Identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, water and rock.
  • Describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials.
  • Compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their physical properties.

Autumn 2 Science Seasonal Changes

During the Autumn 2 half term the pupils have been taught to:

  • Observe changes across the four seasons (Autumn)
  • Observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
