Religious Education work examples Summer
In the Summer term we studied the three themes of Pentecost, Reconciliation/Anointing the Sick and Confirmation and the Universal Church. Each class approached the themes through different topics.
Year 1 SUMMER 1 PENTECOST - HOLIDAYS AND HOLYDAYS.
For Christians, Sunday is the special day of the week. It is the day on which Jesus rose from the dead and is considered to be a day of rest. Pentecost is a special celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit, through whom the risen life of Jesus is given.
In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:
· Holidays as days to be happy.
· Pentecost is a holy day. It is the feast of the Holy Spirit, a special celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
At the end of the Pentecost unit a group of Year 1 children planned, set up and delivered a child led worship to the rest of the class.
Year 1 SUMMER 2 RECONCILIATION - BEING SORRY
For Christians it is important to make choices in the light of our belief in a loving God. There are times when we need to acknowledge our sorrow for making wrong choices. The Church offers the Sacrament of Reconciliation which celebrates God’s unconditional love for us.
In this topic the outcomes were to know and understand that:
· We have choice – sometimes we choose well, and sometimes wrongly.
· God helps us to choose well and to be sorry. God forgives us.
At the end of the Reconciliation unit a group of Year 1 children planned, set up and delivered a child led worship to the rest of the class.
World Religions
Year 1 studied the religion of Hinduism. During the unit Year 1:
- asked questions they would like to find out about Hinduism
- looked at the main beliefs of Hinduism
- learnt about the festival of Diwali
- learnt about Hindu Gods
- looked at symbols of the Hindu religion
Year 3 SUMMER 1 - PENTECOST - SERVING
During this half term, Y3 thought about all the different ways in which Christians serve one another and the community. We thought and wrote about the ways in which the Holy Spirit helps us to take up our life of service.
Our learning outcomes for this topic included:
- Making links between the story of Pentecost and everyday life.
- Recognising the gifts and talents that the Holy Spirit gives to us.
- Thinking how we can use our gifts and talents for the benefit of others.
Pupil-led Collective Worship
Towards the end of this topic, we also held our pupil-led collective worship.
Year 5 Summer 1: Pentecost: Serving.

Christians believe that the Spirit of God is active in each person and in a special way in the community of believers, which is the church. It is the work of the Spirit to enable people to hear Gods message, to respond and share it. The feast of Pentecost is a celebration of the gift of God’s Spirit and its transforming power.
