Autumn 1 2023 English in Year 1

During this half term, we have read the book 'Harry the Happy Mouse', and looked at non-fiction texts and videos based on mice. During the creating interest, reading, and gathering content phases of the narrative unit, we shared and explored in detail the text 'Harry the Happy Mouse' by N.G.K.  We took part in a range of reading response lessons, during which short writing opportunities, both modelled and independent, featured. The children then used this content to write an extension to the book, adding further detail about how an animal helped another character in the story. A non-fiction unit was then carried out. In this unit the children listened to facts about mice, learnt the facts and then wrote the mice facts.

Autumn 2 English in Year 1

During this half term, we started the integrated unit by examining fruits with our senses. Year 1 then wrote a poems about fruits. 

During the creating interest, reading, and gathering content phases of the narrative unit, we shared and explored in detail the text 'Supertato' by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet. We took part in a range of reading response lessons, during which short writing opportunities (both modelled and independent), featured.

A mini unit on instructions was covered in the middle of the narrative unit (an integrated unit). Year 1 followed instructions to make a jelly, wrote their own instructions for how to make a jelly, Year 1 then made a jam sandwich to capture the Evil Pea, and independently wrote the instructions for how to make a jam sandwich. 

The children then used the content gathered in the narrative unit to write an innovated version of the story; changing who had been attacked in the supermarket, how they had been attacked, and how the Evil Pea was captured.

Spring 1 English in Year 1

During the creating interest, reading, and gathering content phases of the narrative unit, we shared and explored in detail the text 'No-Bot The Robot with no Bottom!' by Sue Hendra. We took part in a range of reading response lessons, during which short writing opportunities (both modelled and independent), featured.

A mini unit on recounts was covered in the middle of the narrative unit (an integrated unit). Year 1 made a clay robot face each and then wrote a recount of how the robot face was made.  

The children then used the content gathered in the narrative unit to write an innovated version of the story; changing the robot's name, and changing who the robot thought had the bottom and what it really was. 

Spring 2 English in Year 1

This half term we started the integrated unit with a mini unit revisiting recounts. Year 1 walked around the school grounds to look for signs of winter and then wrote a recount about the winter walk.

During the creating interest, reading, and gathering content phases of the narrative unit, we shared and explored in detail the traditional tale 'Little Red Riding Hood'.  The children took part in a range of reading response lessons, during which short writing opportunities (both modelled and independent), featured.

Year 1 then used the content gathered in the narrative unit to write an innovated version of the story; changing the main characters in the story.

Summer 1 English in Year 1

This half term we started the integrated unit with a mini unit about Beatrix Potter. Year 1 produced non-fiction information writing about the author and illustrator Beatrix Potter.

During the creating interest, reading, and gathering content phases of the narrative unit, we shared and explored in detail the classic story of ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ by Beatrix Potter.  The children took part in a range of reading response lessons, during which short writing opportunities (both modelled and independent), featured. Then we looked at  and wrote an innovated story based on this.

Summer 2 English in Year 1

This half term Year 1 carried out 3 mini-English units. These were:

• Writing an information text for looking after pets.
• Writing an information text about trains.
• Writing a  narrative  story  based  on  ‘Thomas Goes Crash

During the creating interest we visited the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway to learn about steam trains and to ride on a train. For the looking after pets mini unit we shared and explored the story of ‘How to Train a Train by Jason Carter Eaton.  For the narrative story we watched the Time For A Story episode 'Thomas Goes Crash' and wrote an innovated story based on the video. During all 3 units, the children took part in a range of reading response lessons, during which short writing opportunities (both modelled and independent), featured.
