In the Autumn term we studied the three themes of Domestic Church (Family), Baptism and Confirmation (Belonging) and Advent and Christmas (Loving). Each class  approached the themes through different topics.

Year 1  AUTUMN 1 2023 DOMESTIC CHURCH– FAMILY: FAMILIES 

Everyone belongs to the family of God.  It is in the love of a family that Christians first experience the reality of Church.

In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:

• The love and care shown in the family.

• God’s love and care for every family.

At the end of the 'Families' unit a group of Year 1 children planned, set up and delivered a child led worship to the rest of the class.

Year 1 AUTUMN 2 BAPTISM / CONFIRMATION â€“ BELONGING

Baptism enables people to belong to God’s family in a special way. Christians believe that everyone is invited to share in the life and work of God through Baptism.

In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:

  • About belonging to different groups.
  • That Baptism is an invitation to belong to God’s family.

Year 1 AUTUMN 2 ADVENT/CHRISTMAS – LOVING

Advent is a time of waiting in joyful hope for Jesus; it encourages believers to wait for Christ who comes each day and who will come in a special way at the end of time.

In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:

  • About the times that it is necessary to wait and the use of that time.
  • That Advent is a time of waiting to celebrate Jesus’ coming at Christmas.

Spring 1 Year 1 Local Church - Community - Special People

All families who live or worship in a parish are part of the parish family.  As in any family there are people who have special roles within the parish.  On Sunday, in church, we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the Good News of Jesus.  There are special people in our lives who are there to help us.

 

In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:

  • That there are special people in our lives who are there to help us.
  • That on Sunday, in church, we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the Good News of Jesus.

At the end of the 'Special People' unit a group of Year 1 children planned, set up and delivered a child led 'Celebration of the Word' for the rest of the class.

SPRING 2 Year 1 EUCHARIST : RELATING - SPECIAL MEALS

The parish family gathers for the Eucharist (Mass), Jesus’ special meal.  We find strength in gathering for the celebration of the Eucharist and of God’s love in our lives. In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:

  • That there are special people in our lives who are there to help us.
  • That on Sunday, in church, we meet people who do special jobs as we gather to celebrate the Good News of Jesus.

SPRING 2 Year 1 LENT/EASTER - CHANGE

Lent offers a time to reflect on life and change. This is a time to prepare for Easter.  Change is a necessary part of healthy growth. In this topic the learning outcomes were to know and understand:

  • That families and groups share special meals.
  • Mass as Jesus’ special meal.
