Reception Class - September 2025
WELCOME TO RECEPTION CLASS
In Reception we are taught by Mrs Crosbie and supported by Mrs Rowan and Miss Daye..
.
Friday 17th October
We have been spending lots of time outside this week, working on following instructions and coordination. We designed our own jumping and hopping pathway to follow, including turns and leaps - it was a good way to keep warm now that the days are getting cooler.
CONKER NEWS....................CONKER NEWS................CONKER NEWS
Mrs Crosbie's conker has been toppled! Lucy is now the reigning champion with her huge conker, she also has found the smallest conker too. Keep looking, our competition won't end until the last day of this half term.

We found a good use for the conkers too , by having a conker rolling activity. Using a large tube we rolled the conker down and looked to see whose conker travelled the furthest. We chalked numbers on the ground 1,2,3 so we could clearly measure which conker travelled the furthest.
Friday Tidy - In RE we have been talking about creation being a present to us from God. We talked about how we could look after God's present by not dropping litter, recycling our rubbish and taking care of animals and plants. We spent the morning tidying up our outdoor area. We swept the paths, the playground and everything in-between. We collected stones, sand and even the autumn leaves! What a difference we made. Maybe you noticed?
Friday 10th October
We have been thinking about our 5 senses again and we had fun tasting red, yellow and green apples to see if we liked them and which was our favourite. We also used our sense of sight and different kinds of lenses to change what we could see. We looked through binoculars, magnifying glasses and a microscope and we talked about what kind of jobs the equipment could be used for.
Autumn is here and the children have been showing off the conkers they have found on their walks to school and the King Conker competition is well and truly on. Who will find the biggest conker? Mrs Crosbie's conker is wearing the crown at the minute but that could change very easily - bring your conkers in!
We have also looked at some beautiful Autumn leaves and have started a collection in class. We painted some amazing Autumn trees using red, orange brown and even a bit of gold!
We have been looking at all kinds of maps in Understanding the World. From weather maps to sat navs and we followed a map around the school grounds with Mrs Rowan, looking for landmarks as we went. We saw the prayer garden, the junior steps , the wigwam and the prayer classroom on our journey and thanks to following the map.......NOBODY GOT LOST!
Friday 3rd October
Our number of the week was 3 and we were not afraid to use it! Miss Daye took us on a number hunt in the outdoor area where we had to find as many as we could as quickly as we could.
As we continue with our All About Me topic we thought about our homes and told our friends all about our houses. There was many a tiny tongue stuck out in concentration as we each made a model house, just like our own.
There are lots of opportunities to practise our writing skills in the classroom, we have been trying hard to copy the shapes and hold our pencils properly.
We had a lovely Celebration of the Word in class on Thursday morning. The children helped to prepare our small altar as a focus with objects from nature. Poppy even brought a conker in , so we used that too. We had a candle and a cross to focus our thoughts and we turned off the classroom lights to create a prayerful and calm atmosphere. Spending quiet time with God is important in our busy school day - we are teaching the children to be respectful during this times and we know when we light our class candle God is with us.
Lots going on this week!
Friday 26th September
As we are continuing with our "All About Me" topic we have been talking about the 5 senses with reception class. We have been testing our sense of smell and practising our sense of hearing. We took turns smelling 5 different scents to se if we could work out what they were and if we liked them of not. It was tricky because we couldn't see what was in the cups at all so we were really using our noses! We smelled perfume, oranges, washing liquid, caramel and onions!! Some children could guess the smell exactly....well done!
We have been enjoying our music lessons, learning about the instruments of the orchestra and joining in enthusiastically with raps and songs Have a listen!
We have also been learning about our health and fitness. We have discussed a healthy diet, foods that are good for us and foods that aren't. The children were very knowledgeable about fruit and vegetables being healthy and cheese and milk too. We each packed a lunchbox with healthy foods and drinks with the children sharing with their friends their likes and dislikes.
We talked about keeping fit and healthy too. How exercise is super important to keep our hearts healthy. We made our own gym in the yard so that we could exercise. We did press-ups, star jumps, step ups, yoga stretches and even a bit of meditation to calm our minds. After we had exercised we made sure to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
McMillan Coffee Morning.
Thank you for all your cake donation this morning, it was lovely to have a chance to meet you all during our charity coffee morning. There were full tummies all round and smiles galore.
Friday 19th September
I can't believe we have completed two weeks with our new Reception Class already. We have spent time talking to the children and getting to know them. We have been learning new routines, exploring our classroom, learning the names of grown ups in school and our new classmates - it has been lovely. We are so happy to welcome them into our Christ the King family.
Thank you for labelling the children's uniform, if you haven't yet, please do so that their belonging don't get lost.
The children all have a reading book in their bookbags, please read with them and sign the accompanying book.
I try to update the website weekly so you can see what we're up to. We are going to have a FABULOUS year!
Mrs Crosbie
We have been spending time exploring our new classroom, playing with toys, learning new names and having fun. Here are a few pictures of our first weeks.
We are eating our school dinners and packed lunches in the hall with the dinner ladies.
We have also met our .Gardeners. We each have a special friend in Year 6 who will sit with us in assembles sometimes and come and play with us at special times. They are our gardener and we are their seed because they take care of us and help us to grow.

School Communication
Communication with our parents
We use a variety of different ways to keep parents up to date with events and information about the school:
- School Website You can find lots of information on our school website; please check it out. You can visit your child’s class page and find out what’s coming up in school via our School Calendar.
- Our School App (School Jotter 2) can be downloaded to your phone, Apple or Android. The app is our preferred method of communication, and it is essential that you download so you don’t miss any information. You will receive Notices and Newsletters via the app. You can easily access the school calendar, view previous newsletters, and find quick links to the school website.
- Studybugs – This is our platform for class registration and absences. You can register without a code or password, but you must wait until your child is added to our SIMS system. We will notify you once this has been completed. If your child cannot attend school due to illness, you can record the absence on Studybugs. This will directly record to the class register. Please provide as much information as possible about your absence. For example, ‘Billy has a headache and feels nauseous’ rather than ‘Billy is ill’. Studybugs is linked to NHS Child Health information and will provide you with real-time health information on any symptoms your child is experiencing. We ask that you report the absence before 8.45 am.
- School Newsletters Our newsletters are distributed at the end of every month. They usually contain information about what has happened in school over the last month as well as information about what is coming up in the next month. We ask that you read this carefully because it contains a lot of information.
- We also communicate via email and text messages. Please can you ensure that your contact details are all up to date.
