Mathematics

Statement of Intent Maths:

At Christ the King RC Primary school we believe it is important that children develop into fluent mathematical thinkers by developing confidence, independence, resilience and perseverance. Children are given skills to encourage them to think for themselves, make decisions, communicate their understanding and solve problems.

At Christ the King RC Primary School our aim is to develop children’s understanding of mathematics and their ability to reason and solve problems. We believe that children should be encouraged to think for themselves, make decisions and be given regular opportunities to communicate their understanding through mathematical talk and discussion. We want our children to be confident, independent, and resilient in mathematics.

KIRFS

  • KIRF’s are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin much of the maths work we complete in school.
  • They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.
  • An important part of maths development has always been learning certain maths facts by heart.
  • For many years, this has included practising times tables and addition facts, e.g. number bonds and doubles.
  • Each half term, children will cover a number of Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs).
  • These will be taught in school but also need to be practised at home.
  • It is important that they know these facts thoroughly and can recall them instantly.
  • Whilst children have a wide range of abilities in mathematics, the KIRFs are designed to be a set of facts that need to be learnt thoroughly as they build on each other year on year.
  • Again, we stress that the children must aim to know their KIRFs inside out, back to front and with instant recall.
  • Each class teacher has provided songs, games and activities that can be completed at home independently or as a family.

KIRFS can be found on the class webpage and a paper copy is sent home each half term.

We hope that you enjoy working alongside your children with this mathematics work.
